How to Use Snapchat for Your Business

Snapchat Logo

Snapchat, a social media platform based photo and video sharing, continues to grow in popularity. Currently, the platform has 100 million active daily users with a large majority (86%) of users falling between the ages of 13 and 37. If your business is looking to reach a younger demographic, Snapchat is a great platform to use to help grow your brand awareness and reach. But, coming in to Snapchat can be confusing…”You just take funny pictures and selfies? That you can write on? And they disappear?” Well, yes and no. Keep reading to find out just why Snapchat is so fun, how to grow your followers, and how to make it effective for your business.

Why It’s Great for Business:

Snapchat is an incredibly casual social media platform used primarily for entertainment value. Because of this, Snapchat is a great way to break the barrier between customer and business and get personal. Snaps and stories can show office antics, introduce employees, creatively display a new product or sale, and give followers a glimpse in to the daily life at your business.

What’s a “Snap” and What’s a “Story”?

A Snap is like a private message. You can send photos or videos to those that follow you that can be viewed for up to 10 seconds. Once viewed, they disappear forever.

Your Snap Story is like a public update. As a business, this is what you’ll primarily want to use to get the best reach. Anyone who follows you can see your stories by swiping left. You can compile photos and videos in to a story and they’ll be compiled in to one update and will be viewable for 24 hours after you post it. Similar to Snaps, photos and videos on your Snap Story are displayed for up to 10 seconds.

How to Grow Your Followers:

Once you’ve setup an account you can begin to “Add Friends.” Snapchat works much the same way that Twitter does. You add friends to follow them and they’ll often follow you back. Once you add someone as your friend you can see their stories and receive snaps from them.

Once you’ve followed some people, be sure to spread the word about your account by sharing your username. Alternatively, you can share your custom Snapcode, which functions similar to a QR code (ever see an image of a ghost, maybe with an image (business logo?) inside its outline, on a background with a bunch of dots? –that’s a Snapcode). In addition to social sharing, your Snapcode can be displayed on your website too.

What You Should Post:

One great way to get your current followers on other social platforms to follow you on Snapchat, is to post exclusive content on Snapchat. You can then tease this information on your other social media accounts. It’s a great way to grow followers and provide more valuable content to your fans on another platform.
