While we can hypothesize on the exact algorithms the search engines are currently using to rank sites, the search engines are constantly evolving, growing and updating their exact formula for ranking the top sites. We would like to share some SEO tactics that will not help you reach your ranking goals in 2011. Essentially, anything that seems like a sneaky or unethical way to gain rankings, is probably considered a “black hat” SEO technique and shouldn’t be done.
Things you should not do on your site include:
- Hiding text (i.e. black text on a black background)
- Do not sign up for linking schemes, this includes becoming part of a link farm, buying links, or forum spamming.
- Do not publish a ton of pages just for the sake of having a large number of pages indexed by search engines. Pages should be legitimate and not based on efforts to rank for a single keyword.
- Do not believe promises that a one-time overhaul on your site will have you ranking #1 in hundreds of search engines.
